WHITE COUNTY, Ark. (KTHV) - Hazmat crews in White County have cleaned up a spill from a overturned tanker.  

Deputies say that just after 9:30 Tuesday night a tanker truck carrying 3,000 gallons of hydrochloric acid turned over at the intersection of Shilo and Peanut Ridge...more roads.

Officials tell Today's THV that the spill has been cleaned up, and the intersection has been reopened. 

Corporal Steve Hernandez with the White County Sherrif's Department told Today's THV that only 100 gallons spilled.

A nearby home was evacuated as a precautionary measure. The driver of the tanker was not injured. The accident is still under investigation.

According to the EPA, "hydrochloric acid is used in the production of chlorides, fertilizers, and dyes, in electroplating, and in the photographic, textile, and rubber industries."

The Environmental Protection Agency says "Hydrochloric acid is corrosive to the eyes, skin, and mucous membranes.

SEARCY, Ark. (AP) - A 22-year-old Searcy man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to first-degree murder in the shooting death of a 24-year-old man who was killed while working as a janitor. 

The Daily Citizen reports that Sherod Shockley entered the plea...more Tuesday in White County Circuit Court. He's the second man to enter a plea deal in connection with the death of Zachary Mitchell. Two other men are charged in the shooting and await trial.

Mitchell was found dead Oct. 23 at Nephrology Associates. He had been shot in the chest.

WHITE CO., Ark. (KTHV) -- A Bald Knob man was arrested earlier this month for allegedly raping a young child.

According to the White County Sheriff's Department, Bradley Sanders is being held on $100,000 bond.

He is scheduled to appear in court March 6 at 9 am.

UALR Hosts Central Arkansas Science Fairs

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Feb. 9, 2012) – UALR’s College of Science and Mathematics will host three regional science fairs – the Central Arkansas Regional Science and Engineering Fair , the Junior Academy of Science Central Arkansas Regional Fair,...more and the American Chemical Society Chemistry Olympiad – on Friday and Saturday, March 2 and 3, offering competition for both middle- and high school students.

The two fairs will be day-long competitions from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Friday, March 2, in the Donaghey Student Center. The Olympiad will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 2 and 3, in the UALR Science Lab Building Room 280. It is open to all chemistry students nominated by their teacher.

Public, private, and home-schooled students from the counties of Cleburne, Conway, Faulkner, Lonoke, Monroe, Perry, Pope, Prairie, Pulaski, Van Buren, White, Woodruff, and Yell are eligible for the CARSEF’s two levels

The roping will begin at 11:00 on March 3, 2012 with a $10 a man buy-in and a 50% payback.
